หลักสำคัญในการใช้ Two-word verbs (Idioms)
1. เมื่อไม่มี direct object ต้องวาง adverb ไว้ติดกับ verb ทันที เช่น
Please come in.
Do not give up, whatever happens.2. เมื่อมี pronoun เช่น him, her, it, me, us เป็น direct object ต้องวาง pronoun เหล่านี้ไว้หน้า adverb (v.+ pron. + adv.) เช่น
I can't make it out. Right!
I can't make out it. Wrong!
Put them on. Right!
Put on them. Wrong!
3. เมื่อมี noun. เช่น book, pen, etc. เป็น direct object จะวาง noun ไว้หน้าหรือหลัง adverb ก็ได้ (v. + adv. + n.) หรือ (v. + n. + adv.) เช่น
Turn on the light. Right!
Turn the light on. Right!
4. ตามข้อ 3 ถ้า object เป็นคำยาว เช่นมี adj. clause ขยาย ต้องวาง object ไว้หลัง adverb เช่น
He gave away every book that he possessed. เขาให้หนังสือทุกๆเล่มที่เขามี(แก่ใครคนหนึ่ง)ไป
ไม่ใช่ He gave every book that he possessed away.
5. ในประโยคอุทาน (Exclamatory sentences) วาง adverb ไว้หน้าประโยค ยึดหลักว่า
1. ถ้าประธานเป็น noun เอากริยาติดมาด้วย เช่น
Off went John! = John went off.
2. ถ้าประธานเป็น pronoun เอา adverb ขึ้นมาเท่านั้น verb ไม่ต้องเอาขึ้นมา เช่น
Away they went! = They went away.
